The Nigeria Education Emergency Working Groups in Adamawa State have expressed concern over the recurring use of school buildings as temporary shelters for displaced persons during crises.
This concern was raised during a recent visit to the office of the Chief of Staff, Dr. Edgar Sunday Amos, where the group advocated for the government to establish dedicated temporary shelters for emergencies.
The visit coincided with the commemoration of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, highlighting a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety and sustainable financing of schools in Nigeria.
During the meeting, Stephen Medugu, the focal representative of the group in Adamawa, outlined several areas where the government needs to reinforce efforts to safeguard education, pointing out the various challenges that have contributed to the decline in educational standards.
Medugu also commended the Adamawa State Government for its dedication to improving education and for supporting non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in their complementary roles. In response, Dr. Amos praised the NGOs for their contribution to the education sector and reassured the group that the Adamawa State Government takes their concerns seriously.
He further disclosed that Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has directed the State Emergency Management Agency to draft a plan for providing temporary shelters in case of emergencies.
Additionally, Dr. Amos highlighted the achievements of the Fintiri administration in education, such as school renovations, payment of WAEC and NECO fees, scholarships, and the recruitment of teachers to bolster manpower.
Earlier in the day, international and national NGOs operating within the education sector, under the banner of the Nigeria Education Emergency Working Groups, held a gathering of partners and stakeholders at the Banquet Hall, Government House, to commemorate the International Day to Protect Education from Attack.
