The State chapter of Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria, SCIAN, has implored Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, to effectively implement the Adamawa State Disability Law, 2016.
The Adamawa State Chairman of the Spinal Cord Injury Association of Nigeria, Sanusi Adamu, made the call on NAS FM’s Turmin Danya program, which focused on this year’s World Spinal Cord Injury Day.

According to the Chairman, the law, which provides for the establishment of a Commission for People Living Disabilities, has not been implemented since 2016 when former Governor Jibrilla Bindow assented to it.
He said the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, which is vested with the responsibility of protecting and promoting the affairs of the persons living with disabilities is not living up to expection, saying the people managing their affairs in the ministry are not disabled, that’s why the concerns of the PWDs are not being addressed.
Sanusi Adamu, also enjoined the Adamawa government, to establish rehabilitation centre, to properly take care of the Spinal Cord Injury Victims, SCI in the State.
Also speaking, the State Project Officer, Grassroot Researchers Association, Malama Maryam Ahmed Bello, said government, NGOs and Philanthropists, need to come together to support the persons with Spinal Cord Injury, given their helpless condition.
On his part, a Psysiotherapist at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, Dr. Mubarak Yahaya said spinal cord injury occurs mostly due to road traffic accidents, and advised people to be professional while evacuating victims of road accidents from the road.
Dr. Mubarak, who advised motorists to use seat belts and reduce excess speeding, urged people to stop discriminating the Spinal Cord Injury Victims, while calling on government to subsidise the cost of treatment for them.
World Spinal Cord Injury Day, is celebrated on 5th September every year, to create awareness on Spinal Cord Injuries, and to remember and seek support for those living with the injuries.
