Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to preventing and eradicating all forms of violence against women and girls in the State. In his address titled “Our Girls Our Treasure,” Fintiri emphasized the government’s full commitment to addressing the root causes and underlying factors of gender-based violence (GBV) in the state. To achieve this goal, the governor mentioned significant improvements to laws and institutions, along with providing free education, especially for girls.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by SSG Barrister Awal Tukur, made this commitment during the closing and award night ceremony concluding the 16 days of activism on GBV organized by the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with partners. Fintiri, receiving the Champion award for promoting gender equality and empowering women in Adamawa State, revealed his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of violence.
He assured those who have suffered from GBV that they are not alone, emphasizing the commitment to preventing and eliminating all forms of violence while providing necessary care and support. Fintiri recognized women as critical stakeholders in decision-making and leadership, expressing the government’s aim to empower women and girls through poverty alleviation programs in both rural and urban communities.
The governor expressed gratitude to development partners and women groups for their contributions to the fight against GBV in the state. The State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Wunfe Anthony, commended the Governor and his wife Lami Ahmadu Fintiri for leading the campaign against GBV.
Representatives of development partners, including UNFPA, UNDP, and NCWS, acknowledged the timeliness of the 16 days activism theme, “Unite, Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls.” They praised Adamawa State Government’s efforts in advancing human rights and called on stakeholders and citizens to collaborate in eradicating all forms of violence against women and girls.
Recipients of awards included the Adamawa State Deputy Governor Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, recognized as Gender Ambassador, the Speaker Adamawa State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Bathiya Wesley, and the State Assembly majority leader Kate Mamuno for their quality representation and efforts against GBV. Pro Life Initiative was acknowledged for investing in the lives of vulnerable women, and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) received awards for their roles in fighting GBV.
