The impact of the 2023 World Sight Day, may not be forgotten soon by some residents of Adamawa, as they benefit from free eye screening and services courtesy of the Nigerian Optometric Association, Adamawa State Chapter.
The free eye screening according to the state Chairman of the Nigerian Optometric Association, Dr Enwereuzor Chibuike, is in line with this year’s theme of the World Sight Day, which is LOVE YOUR EYES AT WORK.
The Chairman, said the event is part of their corporate social responsibilities to reduce the burden of blindness, as life without vision is almost meaningless.
Dr. Chibuike, who said that the causes of blindness could be genetic, hypertension, diabetes, and trauma, lements that people don’t bother about their eyes because it doesn’t come with clinical symptomps of fever.
He said the theme for this year’s event, LOVE YOUR EYES AT WORK, is not only for people who work in offices, but for anyone who does anything to earn a living.
Another Optometrist, Dr. Mbanaso Ekene, urged people who are exposed to blue light and flying objects to get protective glasses, and advised people, even if they didn’t notice any symptom, to consult eye doctors once in two years.
Some beneficiaries of the free eye screening, who got eye glasses and drugs, said this is their first time of getting such items free, thanking the Adamawa chapter of the Nigeria Optemetric Association, for helping them to strengthen their vision.
As we celebrate this year’s World Sight Day on this Thursday, it is imperative to inform people that a report from the International Labor Organization has revealed that more than 13 million people worldwide live with vision impairment related to their work, and an estimated 3.5 million eye injuries occur in the workplace annually.
