Adamawa state Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri reaffirmed the State Government’s unequivocal readiness to support plans and initiatives aimed at addressing the protracted border challenges that resulted to uncountable communal clashes, several acts of economic sabotage and a number of cross border security disturbances in Adamawa and other frontline states along Nigeria-Cameroon borders.
Fintiri made the stand during opening ceremony of a One-Day Workshop for the creation of platform for local border authoritiesat the Banquet Hall, Government House, Yola.
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri recognized and appreciate the participation of the Deputy Governors of Borno, Taraba, Benue, Cross River and Akwa Ibom,as well Director General of the National Boundary Commission, International Participants, Senior Officials of Federal and State Governments.
The Governor emphasized on the need for such platform equally reiterates the significance of the border community’s perspective that includes their livelihoods, access to resources, and sense of security which are intricately linked to the resolution of these issues.
In her speech, the Chairman Adamawa State Boundary Committee and the state deputy governor,Prof. Kaletapwa G. Farauta said, out of the 2100kms(twenty-one thousand ) of the Nigeria-Cameroon boundary, Adamawa shares about 600km stretch, spanning over 9(nine) local government areas.
In their separate address, Director General National Boundary Commission Surv. Adamu A. Adaji represented by Amina Nyako noted that peace and security are directly intertwined with good border governance and attainment of sustainable development in the borderlands. The representative of the Comptroller General of Immigration Service, states that Adamawa has about 712km borderline without clear demarcation.
The workshop with the theme: Teansforming Borders from barriers of separation to bridges of cooperation and integration is expected to promote peaceful coexistence, good neighborliness and sub-regional integration.
