By Muhammad Buhari

Governments at all levels have been called upon to establish ministries and agencies for Persons with Special Needs to promote equal access to services and opportunities.

The call followed the commemoration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is a globally recognized observance dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

The day highlights the importance of inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities, while also celebrating their achievements and contributions to society.

The major setback faced by people with disabilities is the nonchalant attitudes of some irresponsible persons who treat them with disdain.

Statistics released by the United Nations Population Funds estimated that 32 million people with disabilities living in Nigeria, including children, do not have access to infrastructure; health, education, inconclusive job opportunities, and are incapable of conducive dwelling, regardless of the provision of transportation.

Gambo Haruna, is a person with special needs in Mubi, he said, they are being devalued, marginalized, discriminated and stigmatized by Nigeria Government and Nigerians.

Also, Ayuba Sahabi, a physically challenged with visual impairment, while lamenting their condition, called on the community members to respect and value them like any other human being.

The persons with special needs are worried that the Adamawa state government is yet to implement the disability law 2016.

They also lamented that they were sidelined during the distribution of the palliatives by the Adamawa state government.

In addition, they advocated for the establishment of the Federal Ministry of Persons with Disabilities to give them a sense of belonging in the country.

The theme for the 2023 International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) is: “United in action to rescue and achieve the SDGs for, with and by persons with disabilities.
