In a significant move, the Adamawa State Government has announced its commitment to allocate three billion naira towards addressing the arrears of pensions and gratuities for the state’s retired civil servants. This disclosure was made by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri during a meeting with the leaders of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), who visited to celebrate his recent Supreme Court victory.
Governor Fintiri emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of retired civil servants towards the state’s development by ensuring the clearance of their pension and gratuity backlog. The initiative is set to commence next week, marking a pivotal step in supporting the welfare of retired workers.
The conversation with NLC leaders also touched on employment strategies and the anticipation of a new minimum wage announcement by the federal government in April. Governor Fintiri assured the labor representatives of the state’s readiness to comply with the updated wage standards.
Moreover, in light of the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government, Governor Fintiri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing palliatives for state workers to alleviate hardship.
The importance of punctuality was highlighted, with the governor promising to settle owed consequential adjustments to civil servants this February.
Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, the NLC Chairman for Adamawa, expressed the labor union’s congratulations to Governor Fintiri on his legal victory and acknowledged the six-month wage provision for state civil servants, urging continued focus on improving workers’ welfare.
