Fourteen of November every year is considered by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Day for Diabetes to create awareness on the prevention, treatment, and care of the ailment.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when a pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980 from 4.7 percent to 8.5 percent in the adult population.
United Nations General Assembly set aside the 14th of November every year as the international day for diabetes to create awareness of the urgent need to prevent the high rate of the disease.
Speaking on the significance of the day, Dr. Hammadama Umaru, while stressing on some causes of diabetes, said diabetes is of two types which consist of diabetes A and diabetes B.
According to him, many of those harbouring the disease are unaware.
According to him, weight loss, increased thirst, and frequent urination, among others, are some of the symptoms of diabetes.
Dr Umaru, therefore, advises the public to go to the hospital in order to know their diabetes status every six months.
The theme for this year’s world diabetes day is “Access to diabetes care.”
