Adamawa state Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has called for the educational rights of women, as idleness contributes to violence against women.
Governor Fintiri made the call at the Spotlight Initiative Handover Close-out ceremony, 2023 held at the Adamawa Government House, Yola.
The governor, represented by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, also encourages traditional institutions, and religious bodies to be proactive in the fight against gender violence, and assures the sustainability of the programs initiated by the Spotlight Initiative.
In their separate remarks, Secretary to the State Government, Auwal D Tukur and the Commissioner of Information and Strategy Mrs. Neido G Kofulto noted that the benefits of the initiative are integral in protecting victims of Gender Based Violence and the vulnerable, hence, the assurance to maintain the initiative in Adamawa state.
The representative of the United Nations, Mr. Koessan Kuawu said the Spotlight initiative is the world’s largest intervention to end violence against women and girls, adding that the initiative strengthens and develops gender-sensitive laws and legislations.
The spotlight Initiative established a centre called One Stop Centre, for referral of victims and survivors of gender-based violence to cater for their needs, which include the provision of Free clinical care, feeding, and shelter for a maximum of three weeks.
Some of the beneficiaries, Eshi Simon and Maria David appreciated the Spotlight, and urged the Adamawa government to broaden the initiative to save girl Child in the state.
The initiative is a global partnership between the United Nations and the European Union aims at eliminating all forms of violence against women, girls and to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Developmentment.
