As the world commemorate World Translation Day 2023, Nas FM reporter Sumayya Muhammad Dzarma spoke to relevant stakeholders on the significance of the day.
International Translation Day is meant as an opportunity to pay tribute to the work of language professionals, which plays an important role in bringing nations together, facilitating dialogue, understanding and cooperation, contributing to development and strengthening world
Transposition of a literary or scientific work, including technical work, from one language into another language, professional translation, including translation proper, interpretation and terminology, is indispensable to preserving clarity, a positive climate and productiveness in international public discourse and interpersonal communication.
Thus, on 24 May 2017, the General Assembly adopted resolution 71/288 on the role of language professionals in connecting nations and fostering peace, understanding and development, and declared 30 September as International Translation Day
For decades Language barrier has been a stumbling block in communication, especially among parties of different cultural background.
This day is celebrated to recognize the impact of translations and translators in uniting the world by bridging the gaps among languages.
The Head of Languages, Department Federal polytechnic, Mr Umar Amos Adiya, said the diversity in language in man’s day to day activities has prompted the need for translations in core sectors of various institutions of education, media, and religion.

The impact of translation is vital in media houses and it is in the light of this that the Head Of News and Current Affairs Department, NAS FM Mubi, Mr Bilyaminu Gambo Kongkol expressed the rationale behind translating news stories into different indigenous languages.

Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and the planet.
There is no doubt that language is a barrier, while translations serves as a bridge. Thanks to the effort of translators around the globe.
