Residents and marketers in Mubi have decried the skyrocketing of commodities that include oil and onion which are considered key essentials for cooking.
While expressing their sadness in an interview with our correspondent, Zainab Muhammad Sa’ad, the residents say the hike in prices of soup’s ingredients has become a public concern.
The National Bureau of Statistics said the average price of 1kg of Onion bulb rose by 26.65 percent on a year-on-year basis from N396.96 in July 2022 to N502.73 in July 2023.
It also revealed that the average price of one litre of Palm Oil increased by 35.7 percent on a year-on-year basis, from N890.67 in July 2022 to N1208.62 in July 2023.
Also here in Mubi, oil and onions have skyrocketed which triggered several complaints from the public.
Alhaji Kalame Butu who sells onion at the Mubi main market disclosed that the high cost of fuel culminated in the hardships the residents are facing.
He hinted that despite the high cost of transportation, they import onions from other states.
He, further, opined that if the government and stakeholders could support farming then onions would be cheaper.
Also, a seller of vegetable oil, Mallam Rabi’u Kabiru who decried the increase in the prices of cooking oil, said one jerrican is now sold at the sum of N37,000.
Moreso, Mallam Balan Tanko said he came to shop but realised that the prices of almost all the commodities in the market had skyrocketed.
Tanko called on traders to have people at heart by reflecting on the lingering economic hardships that the residents are facing.
Mubi residents are also expecting governments at all levels to put forth measures that will end the suffering in the country.
