ICRC Engages Journalists in Adamawa state on Humanitarian Journalism

The international Committee of the Red Cross ICRC has organized a two day workshop for journalists on Humanitarian journalism.

The workshop held at Homtel hotel in Jimeta had in attendance journalists from Adamawa, Taraba, Gombe and Borno States.

In her welcome address, the Head of Sub Delegation of ICRC in charge of the North Eastern Nigeria Mrs Charlie Coste welcomed all the participants at the workshop.

According to her, the workshop was organized to train journalists on how to report the situation of people who are affected by conflict, insurgency or any form of terrorism with a view of ensuring that relief items reach the victims in order to ameliorating their hardship.

Another facilitator Dr Bala Mohammed of mass communication department at Bayero University BUK Kano who presented a paper on Humanitarian journalism said the essence of the work was the discuss causes of humanitarian crises  that brought calamitous tragedy to Nigerian people as it affects almost everything and to see how best journalists can report such cases.

According to him, victims of those conflicts should be the center peace of the news reportage instead of putting emphasis on the destructions made by terrorists because ICRC is concerned with supporting the vulnerable.

On his part, public relations officer of the ICRC Aliyu Dawobe said journalists have a great role to play in reporting the situation of people who are affected by insurgency, this he said would help the ICRC to render Humanitarian needs to the affected people.

Dawobe who said that the activities of the ICRC have nothing to do with religion, equally said they render Humanitarian service to victims of conflicts in respective of their status.

Highlights of the workshop were the presentation of certificates of attendance to the participants and group photographs among others.

The workshop which started on Tuesday 8th November 2022 ended on Wednesday November, 9th 2022.
