As part of activities to mark this year’s International Women’s Day, a non-governmental organization, Betso Charity Foundation, organized a seminar in Yola to educate women on the significance of the day and inspire them to become women of substance.
The event, held at the Murtala Nyako Center, was attended by women from various walks of life. Lectures were delivered on women’s health, women in entrepreneurship, and other aspects of women’s empowerment.
Speaking at the event, the founder of Betso Charity Foundation, Halima Bakari Betso, urged women to dream big and strive for greater achievements.
She emphasized that the purpose of International Women’s Day is to uplift women for a brighter future, calling on them to be courageous while setting their goals.
Halima Betso further stated that when women unite, they can achieve milestones that positively impact their families and society at large. She added that the foundation was established to promote equity and inclusion, empower women, and provide education and healthcare to the vulnerable and less privileged in society.
Speakers from various fields encouraged women to prioritize their health, pursue education, and engage in entrepreneurship to become self-reliant and serve as voices for the voiceless.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief Justice of Adamawa, Hapsat Abdulrahman and Jamila Babuba of FIDA, called for collective action to enhance gender equality, eliminate discrimination, and uphold the dignity of women and girls in society.
In a separate remark, Galaxy Thami, Chairperson of the Network of Adamawa Women-Led Organizations (NAWLO), commended women for their unity and encouraged women’s groups to remain united for their collective development.
She identified harmful traditional beliefs and practices as major barriers to women’s progress and urged the government to implement policies that support and empower women.
These years international women’s day heaps on the theme: Accelerate Action; Uplifting Women For Brighter Future.
Key highlights of the event included lectures by Dr. Maisaratu Bakari, Maryam Gyattam Bassi, Sarah Kwabe, Fatima Bello Raji, and Titilayo Adewunmi, as well as a poetry presentation by students of GGSS Yola
