World Brain Day: Expert identifies Road accident,Prolong Labour ans Smoking as agents od disorder.

On the occasion of this year’s World Brain Day, a psychiatrist, Dr. Dorcas Isaac, has identified road traffic accidents, prolonged labour, and smoking as some of the causes of brain disorders.

Dr. Dorcas Isaac of the Psychiatry Department, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital Bauchi, disclosed this in an interview with our Correspondent, TASI’U HASSAN.

According to the psychiatrist, the brain is the most complex part of the body, as it controls most of the activities of the body, and it could be affected by various factors such as child abuse, loss of loved ones, accident, liver failure, diabetes, hypertension, cancer diseases, among other.

She said whenever there’s an issue in the brain, it gives either neurological or psychiatric symptoms, explaining that the neurological symptoms include loss of sensation, weakness of some parts of the body, impaired coordination or memory, while the psychiatric changes include changes in behaviour, changes in perception, thoughts or emotions.

Dr. Dorcas who said that the treatment of the case depends on the types of cause,   enjoined people with psychiatric disorders to always visit the hospital, as the treatment is usually given in the hospital.

On the ways to prevent brain disorders, the Psychiatrist, says people should avoid stress, use of substances, ensure adequate rest and sleep, control of diabetes and hypertension.

 

Each year, World Brain Day is celebrated on 22 July, to increase awareness, conduct research and provide support for people impacted by brain-related disorders, and reinforce the importance of brain health.
