Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has given the green light to start paying the new minimum wage of ₦70,000 from August 2024.
TFhe state chairman of the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC), Comrade Emmanuel Fashe, spilled the beans after a private meeting with the governor at the government house in Yola.
According to Comrade Fashe, the meeting between the labor leaders and the governor went smoothly, and the governor immediately ordered the new minimum wage to be paid starting this month.
This decision comes on the back of the governor’s earlier promise to match whatever wage law the federal government passes, ensuring that both state and local government workers receive their pay according to the 2019 salary adjustment guidelines.
However, Comrade Fashe pointed out that local governments might be let off the hook this month due to the sheer number of workers and the short time to prepare payment schedules.
He added that the 2019 table will be used for now so workers don’t have to wait too long.
If the national salaries and wages commission releases any new guidelines later, adjustments will be made accordingly.
