Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has issued an Executive Order banning all scavenging activities across the state. The ban, effective from August 14, 2024, applies to all 21 Local Government Areas and is aimed at curbing practices that pose health risks or create public nuisances.
Under the new order, scavenging—defined as rummaging through waste or engaging in related hazardous activities—is now a criminal offense. Violators are subject to arrest, prosecution, and penalties, including up to six months imprisonment, a fine of ₦100,000, or both.
The Executive Order grants security agents the authority to search for and apprehend anyone violating the ban.
The Governor also warned that individuals who attempt to obstruct the enforcement of this order or subvert justice in any form will face prosecution under the Nigerian Constitution and the Adamawa State Penal Code.
Governor Fintiri emphasized that the ban is part of the state government’s commitment to maintaining public health and safety.
He called on citizens to support the initiative by adhering to the new regulations and ensuring a cleaner environment for all.
The order remains in effect until further notice.
