Teachers and parent of the students of the Accelerated Basic Education Program and Teaching at the Right Level centres in Gombi local government area have expressed satisfaction with the educational improvement of the student.
During a visit to some communities in Gombi, a delegation of pressmen led by UNICEF assessed the impact of the program, which is specifically designed for children and youth who have faced educational disruptions, are overage for their current level, or have never attended school and wish to start from Primary level.
According to facilitators, the Accelerated Basic Education Program is yielding positive outcomes in Anguwan Tapare.
Mrs. Selina Daniel, a facilitator at the ABEP centre, confirmed that students initially struggled to respond, but the program’s simple teaching approach has led to gradual improvement.
A parent, Jauro Isa Muhammed, whose daughter is enrolled in the program, shared that many parents in the community had not recognized the value of education, leading to low enrolment rates.
He however, commended the intervention of UNICEF, noting that education is crucial for a successful society.
Gombi Local Government operates 62 Accelerated Basic Education Program centres, each serving at least 50 pupils, which has significantly reduced the number of out-of-school children in the area.
However, despite the progress, the Executive Secretary, Yahya Balarabe, expressed concern that the overall number of out-of-school children in the local government remains alarmingly high.
While acknowledging the impact of the Global Partnership for Education Accelerated Fund intervention, Balarabe called for additional support from other NGOs to bridge the gap.
Abdurrahaman Ibrahim Ado, UNICEF’s Education Specialist, Bauchi Field Office explained that the ABEP and TaRL is designed to bridge the educational gap by targeting out-of-school children, particularly those who have never attended school or dropped out.
The Accelerated Basic Education Program and Teaching at the Right Level are initiatives supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund in collaboration with Adamawa State Government and funded by the Global Partnership for Education – Accelerated Fund.
